Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will bid welcome to Christmas on the night of 28 November, in the Santa Ana Square at 20:00 hours, and in a symbolic act, will illuminate the emblematic public square and light up the decorations installed on numerous other squares & streets around the capital, which the Town Hall had been installing these last few days to set the atmosphere for the various acts programmed to celebrate the festivities.

The act will be accompanied by a Christmas concert performed by the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Symphony Band in the Santa Ana Square and the inauguration of the traditional Canarian Nativity at the Casas Consistoriales, the work carried out by the nativity scene-maker Fernando Benítez.

This act, which sets in motion the Christmas festivities in the capital city of Gran Canaria, paves the way for a complete programme of such festivities involving more than seventy events that underline the dynamic & endearing character of the festivities, such as the classic Christmas concerts performed by “Los Gofiones” and “La Trova”, as well as the much anticipated Nativity Scene made of sand on Las Canteras beach, and the Nativity scenes at the museum - “Museo Castillo” in Mata, inspired in Lanzarote by the figure of César Manrique, and the” Palacete Rodríguez Quegles” and the public square “San Telmo”.

Highlights of the programme are of a distinctive cultural nature, especially musical events, that include the IVth Canaries Gospel Festival, as well as six jaxx concerts and nine musical encounters featuring those rogrammed in their respective cycles: Jazz entre muros & Nueve cañones sin banda, at the “Museo Castillo” in Mata which, following the first function in 2018, are hopefully expecting a similar full-house.

The theatre also plays a role at this time of the year, with two productions promoted by the “Distrito Cultura”(Department of Culture) in the section «Es jueves, es teatro»(Thursday is Theatre). Los nocturnos, by Irma Correa, directed by Quino Falero, at thePérez Galdós Theatre and Esquilo, nacimiento y muerte de la tragedia de Rafael Álvarez, “El Brujo”, staged in the “Jerónimo Saavedra Hall” at the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium.

Other recreational & entertaining acts and events celebrating Christmas in the capital will take place at areas like “Mesa y López” street, featuring a fairly intensive daily programme of musical & theatrical performances as well as some for young children.

In the section dedicated for the youngsters of the house, the one with the most expectation will be the arrival by sea of the “Reyes Magos” (Three Kings) in the capital city, which will take place on the morning of 5 January, on the esplanade in the docks of “Muelle Sanapú”, next to the “Poema del Mar” Aquarium, and their subsequent Grand parade, whci will set off once again from the “Castillo de La Luz” in the direction of “San Telmo”.

In addition, the young ones can enjoy other Christmas activities at the “Bibliotecas Públicas Municipales” (Municipal Public Libraries), pedagogical acts in the “Gabriel Rodó” hall of the Auditorium, concerts and special other activities for them, such asm”Los LiTTle”, the production by the company Espíritus de Sal, the visit to the “Patrulla Canina” (Dog Patrol) and others, all of them situated on Mesa y López street.
