Talk given by Dolores Corbella y Cristóbal Corrales: “La canariedad encubierta de Benito Pérez Galdós”(The hidden ‘canariness’ or sense of Canarian identity of Benito Pérez Galdós)

Master of the language, Benito Pérez Galdós knew that no one linguistically sets or adapts their works and describes their characters based on the typical manner of speaking in Madrid, Santander, Andalucía or America. Neverthless, except for some of his works penned in his youth, none of his great novels were set or evolved in the Canaries. This was no obstacle though, for throughout his productive work, we discover some specific ‘voices’of the original dialect of this universal Canarian that reveal a certain ‘Canariness´ which not even he himself was aware of.
