Filmoteca Canaria dedicates a cycle to the American novelist & scriptwriter James M. Cain (1892-1977), one of the best authors of crime novels. In spite of his long career as a novelist, Cain is better known for his film adaptations of detective books.

EL CARTERO SIEMPRE LLAMA DOS VECES (The Postman always rings Twice)(1946)

Synopsis: During the Great Depression of the ‘30s, a drifter Frank Chambers (John Garfield), is hired to work in a roadside diner owned by the middle-aged owner, Nick Smith (Cecil Kellaway) and Cora (Lana Turner), his young, beautiful & unfaithful wife. Soon Frank & Cora begin to get attracted to each other. James M. Cain got his inspiration from “The Beast Within” (1890) by Émile Zola, but the novel by Cain moves the world of evil, crime & fatalism in Zola’s work to the setting of the Great Depression.
