The opera relates the love story between an Ethiopian slave (Aida) and an Egyptian military general (Radamès). Radamès wishes to be the overall commander of the Egyptian army in order to marry Aida, but he is also desired by the daughter of the king of Egypt, (Amneris). At the head of the army, Radamès is received warmly as he returns triumphant having vanquished the king of Ethiopia (Aida’s father), and taken her prisoner. Aida tenderly convinces Radamès to betray his fellow countrymen. But later, torn by guilt, Radamès gives himself up. After being tried, Radamès is condemned to be buried alive.
