Violetta, a distinguished Parisienne courtesan falls in love with Alfredo Germont, and goes to live with him in a country house near Paris. Alfredo’s father tries to get his son to return to an orderly life, and, convinced that love carries more weight than parental authority, humbles himself and pleads with Violetta to end the relationship that is harming his son so much. She manages to convince the old man of her sincerity & love, and, making a sacrifice for the benefit of her loved one, abandons the house having written a frivolous farewell note. Alfredo, disenchanted with her deception, confronts & offends Violetta publicly, resulting in his father then explaining of her great love for him. Alfredo goes to see Violetta to ask forgiveness. She is extremely ill with only a few hours to live, and they spend these recalling the fond memories of their love together.
