  farmer, who inherited a very large property which in older times had prosp
 ered, but now he is ruined. He refuses to leave his land and keeps hoping t
 o get a loan so he could buy cotton seeds and revive the crop he so yearns 
 for. The economic decline coupled with the moral turpitude is clearly expre
 ssed by the small- minded, grotesque &amp; racist attitudes of the characte
