Opera in four acts with music by Giuseppe Verdi & libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, about the drama Hernani by Victor Hugo. 

Between the Habsburgs and the Dukes of Aragon there is an old feud. A Duke has been assaniated, but his son was able to escape: since then he travels the country under the name of ‘Ernani’ and incites anger against King Carlos, who wants to be crowned emperor (Carlos I of Spain, V of Germany).
