Varela, the Cuban rock singer-songwriter who began as part of the Nueva Trova music genre, has acted as a non-conformist troubadour in Castro’s Cuba. His urban music sounds bears traces of Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan & Joaquín Sabina. The first Cuban performer to have his videos shown on MTV Latina, Varela has permeated frontier rock with Cuban essences, in a round-trip that, still being aware of the tradition, has allowed him to freely introduce stylistic & thematic novelties in the music he has been bequeathed.
